Generator Buyers Response

This may come as a surprise to you – as it does to most of our customers - but, most new generators being sold by the large manufactures are being equipped with proprietary software control systems.

Here’s the problem - with proprietary software, these manufacturers are trying to FORCE you to use their expensive service groups.

You see, these control systems enable electronic diagnostics and the resetting / recalibration of engine, stator, and transfer switch parameters when repairs are performed.

The software “keys and codes” required to access these control systems are NOT being made available to you - the Customer, nor to your 3rd-party service providers. Correspondingly, customers are being denied the choice of whom you want to service your own equipment. Even skilled technicians within your own Company are not permitted, nor able, to service your equipment.

As the largest independent generator service company in the Southeast, we at Power Pro-Tech Services, have had a front row seat in witnessing the ugly implications of this trend.

By limiting competition for generator service, these large manufacturers have the leverage to charge exorbitant prices for repairs and other after-market services.

Worse still is that, according to most of our customers, they were never informed that their generators were being equipped with proprietary software.

Here is another concern. PPT believes there is a National safety & security issue at stake here. In times of disasters, Generators are essential to sustaining life and safety. Proprietary systems jeopardize public health and safety by impairing the ability of skilled technicians to repair emergency power generators at any time, any place, in any conditions.

Now, the Good News.

There are several exceptionally high-quality generator brands that are committed to "Open Architecture". These include Katolight, Taylor Power, Magnum, and Triton, just to name a few. There is no need to do business with companies engaging in anti-consumer, anti-competitive business practices.

However, if you do wish to buy from one of the large generator companies, insist first on receiving fully-enabled copies of ALL software keys and codes for each generator and transfer switch that you purchase, with complete manuals and all other operating instructions.
